West Coast Avengers #1 — “Avengers Assemble” Synopsis

West Coast Avengers #1 (September 1984, written by Roger Stern, art by Bob Hall and Brett Breeding) introduces the team’s founding and sets up its California base.

Hawkeye (Clint Barton) and his wife Mockingbird (Bobbi Morse) tour their new headquarters — the Palos Verdes Avengers Compound — in Los Angeles County. Hawkeye explains that the Avengers are now expanding west of the Rockies, and Vision (via video link) confirms that the team is recruiting new members.

In San Francisco, Tigra (Greer Grant Nelson) is wrapping up work at Jessica Drew’s detective agency. Jessica offers her a permanent job, but Tigra receives a mysterious call from Vision offering her a large sum to join the West Coast Avengers. She leaves without telling Jessica, who worries for her friend and contacts the Cat’s Jazz Club to keep an eye on her.

In the Mojave Desert, Simon Williams (Wonder Man) is working as a stuntman. His invulnerability makes him ideal for dangerous stunts, but he also receives a Vision call. He changes into Wonder Man and heads to the compound
